10 Alternative Uses for Oatmeal

Who knew we could do so much with Oatmeal?

  1. Dandruff buster for your fur buddy: cut a leg off an old pair of pantyhose and fill with ¼ cup of oatmeal, then tie the “tube” around the spout of the tub. Let warm water run through it and then bathe your dog in that water.
  2. Keep in the heat:  Fill a long, clean tube sock with oatmeal and tie it off. Place it where you feel a draft.
  3. Relieve minor burns: Mix ½ cup of oatmeal in a ½ cup of water and let sit for a minute. Apply the paste to the affected area and leave it on for 5 minutes. I like to then add a drop or two of Lavender essential oil on the area and gently rub into the skin. Lavender is very soothing to the skin.
  4. Keep fridge smelling great: Put a cup of oatmeal in the fridge. It will absorb the stubborn smells.
  5. Make modeling clay for kids: Mix 1 cup of dry oatmeal, 2/3 cut of flour and ½ cup of water. This forms a clay-like dough, easy for forming into all the things kids can thing up.
  6. Cleans cast-iron cookware: Sprinkle the pot/skillet with oatmeal and rub it with a dishrag. The oatmeal will scrub away food particles without ruining the cookware’s seasoning.
  7. Heat those pains away:   Fill a tube sock with oatmeal, tie it closed and heat in the microwave for 1-2 minutes. Place it on the sore area for a soothing warmth that can mold to your body. Again, there are some great essential oils you can add to the oatmeal. Try Wintergreen, Peppermint, or Lavender. I love to use Frankincense to relax.
  8. For houseplants: Mix 2 Tbs. of dry oatmeal into the soil of your potted plant. The oatmeal contains minerals like iron and phosphorous that will help nourish it.  You can do this monthly.
  9. Skin health: Try an oatmeal mask. Grind 1 Tbs. of oatmeal in a food process or even a coffee grinder. Mix in 2 tsp. of homey and ¾ tsp of warm water. If you have them, add a few drops of skin loving essential oils like Patchouli, Geranium, Jasmine, Frankincense, or even Lavender. Apply to your face and then relax for 10 minutes before rinsing with warm water. The oatmeal is great for exfoliation and absorption of excess skin oils, while the honey moisturizes.
  10. Mop up oil spills: Knock over some olive oil, drop an egg on the floor? Cover the spill with oatmeal, leave for 5 minutes and then easily wipe up.
