Why should I be interested in MSM?
I don’t know if you’re like me, but I am super fearful of falling as I age.  I’ve had so many clients and friends that were doing well until they fell.  Recently,  I went to lunch with a friend and we were talking about that very subject. I said I was so afraid to fall and mess up my hip (I had a replacement) or anything else.  She agreed.   Then I find out that night she actually did slip and fell and tore a calf muscle, which was excruciatingly painful for her.

What can we do about this as we age?
Of course, and probably most importantly, we can do strengthening exercises and stretching.  Both of these are activities that will have the most impact on your aging process.  But that is a subject for a whole other bog.

One of the easy things we can do is add some specific supplements to our diet.  I have a blog that goes into the benefits of Turmeric.  I’ll put the link for that blog in the comments.

Another really important supplement we can consider is MSM (methylsulfonylmetane).  MSM can be found naturally in some green vegetables, milk, and even in our own bodies.   It can also be found in the phytoplankton in the oceans.  But there are also some great supplements that will add to the MSM in your diet and body.

What are the benefits of MSM?
Some of the benefits of MSM include support for joint health and connective tissue healing. It can also offset inflammation-triggering genes that actually get worse in the winter months.  Adding this supplement can boost joint health AND healing. Typically, it takes 3 months to experience the full effects.

Additional benefits include:
  • Supports joint health
  • Supports recovery time of joints after exercise
  • Supports normal range of motion
  • Supports bone health
  • Supports normal metabolic functions and circulation
  • Aids the immune system
  • Supports hair and skin health

According to one source, it is called the miracle supplement because it has been shown to lower inflammation, fight the effects of stress and pain, and raise immunity.

What to look for?
  • Powder or powder filled capsules seem to be the most bioavailable
  • Starting dosage is about 500 mg 2 or 3 times a day. You can increase that but always check with your health care professional.

What do I use?
As always, I say do your homework.  Read the labels. Some supplements contain synthetic byproducts and fillers.  Look for organic brands.

My preferred source for most supplements is Young Living.  Luckily, they have two great products that offer MSM.  They have a powder and a powder capsule.  I use the capsule because it does not have Stevia, which is used in the powder.  I have used both and I like the taste of the powder, but the capsule is easier for me and easier to take with me.  If you’re interested in them, here are the links to review the information sheets on both products.
