Have you checked out the benefits of Turmeric?

Most of us know Turmeric as a spice used in many Indian dishes.  But do you know the benefits of Turmeric as a supplement?  I have been using it for about 5 years when my physician recommended it to slow down the arthritic pain in my hip. I eventually had to have a hip replacement, but I swear by this supplement to keep any other arthritic pain at bay.

Here are some of the reported benefits:

  • Reduces inflammation
  • Can relieve joint, back and knee pain
  • Improves digestion and blood circulation
  • Promotes cardiovascular health
  • Enhances immune support.
  • Pro Tip:  This is not like taking an Aspirin for immediate pain relief. It is a supplement and therefore, works over time as it gets into your system.  The effects it will have on inflammation is a gradual process. The one I take generally takes about 1 month before the person notices the benefit.

It’s important to know, not all Turmeric is equal. Here are some things to consider when choosing.

  1. The ingredient that is so helpful with inflammation is Curcumin. Make sure your supplement says “Turmeric with Curcumin.”
  2. Always choose Organic.  Organic turmeric is grown without pesticides or harmful chemicals which would defeat your purpose in getting healthier.
  3. Read the reviews. There haven’t been a lot of studies published but it is helpful to see the results other have had.   Obviously, don’t just read what the manufacturer says.
  4. Generally good Turmeric will also contain a black pepper derivative called BioPerine.  Since Turmeric and Curcumin are fat-soluble, they need either fat or the pepper to efficiently absorb the supplement. There are some good brands that do not use Black Pepper but be sure to research any brand you are considering.
  5. Some brands add artificial fillers to cut costs including titanium dioxide and artificial coloring.  Avoid any of these.  Read your labels.
  6. Make sure the supplement has been Third Party Tested.  The studies should be conducted in labs not connected with the manufacturer and in an FDA approved facility.
  7. If you are using a form of Turmeric that comes in a capsule, make sure the capsule is made of vegetable cellulose. You want your capsule to be natural and the veggie cellulose capsule tends to dissolve better and show better results.
  8. Dosage varies with brands but from what I’ve read, about 1500 mg would be suffice to provide anti-inflammatory support.
  9. Before adding a Turmeric supplement to your daily routine, be sure to talk to your physician. It can interact with certain medical conditions or medications.

Of course I have my favorite and it meets all the requirements above.  I’ve been using this brand for 4 years.  It’s crazy. I’ve forgotten to take it 3 or 4 days while we are traveling.  Then all of a sudden I’ll wake up and I’m achy all over!   I’m a believer.  I have had no adverse effects from it.  The one I take is in a capsule and you only have to take it once a day. No stomach issues for me.
